Amina’s stomach made another plea to her as she continued editing the pictures she had taken from a youth conference the day before, she had turned deaf ears to the repeated growling her stomach had been making as she wanted to finish the work ahead of her instead of taking a break because she was already running late for an art exhibition she was invited to attend, where the 25-year-old aspiring photographer would have some of her pictures on display.
Amid the anger in her heart, which was instigated by the conference conveners, after they had called to hurry her to deliver the pictures while they were yet to pay her any percentage of her rates at all, and the intensity of the sun racing down sweat on her face, she had to attend to her mother, whom she had become an untrained nurse for before stepping out. With a wide smile on her face, she served her mother’s meal alongside her medications and took a small portion of the plantain porridge she had made as she hurried to head out.
She had learned to find the beautiful things in life and hold on tightly to them regardless of the shade that life brought her way, so she held on to make her mother happy and every time a client delayed in paying her rate, or someone complained about her pictures having no depth, she looks to the favourite picture of her mother to get inspired to do more, and every time, her mother’s words echo loudly — “Everyone will have an opinion, let yours be the first one to count”.
Amina couldn’t finish editing the pictures as she rushed out to meet up with the event, as she entered the venue, she heard her name called repeatedly and as she walked over, she was surprised to see Niyi Fagbemi stand in front of one of them in awe, and as he turned to take a look at her, his words made her speechless but also ignited a spark in her — “we need to work on my next project together”…
